Sustainability is about much more than just kilowatt hours and euros. Of course, reducing CO2 and conserving resources are central aspects for implementing the energy transition. But these targets can be achieved only if a company is on sound economic footing and does not lose sight of its social responsibility for its employees.

Sustainability is currently not only one of the most used words, but also one of the most misunderstood terms. It is mostly equated with ecological aspects, while the social and economic aspects move into the background. In companies in particular, however, it is important to consider all three areas and to achieve a balance, explains Frank Springer, vice president marketing and innovation and sustainability officer at TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP.

A sound economic position is just as important as a clear strategy and measures for reducing emissions. And last but not least, all this is also a social task and responsibility. It is only when we take these connections into account that industry and society together can achieve climate neutrality by 2045 or before.

In consideration of these values and targets, TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP is continuously driving projects that not only have a positive influence on energy consumption, resources, and the environment, but also improve the working conditions and the team spirit among the employees. Here is a selection:

The Wild Meadow land restoration project was initiated after a new test and development center had been completed at the Wenden-Gerlingen site in mid-2020. TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP restored the 5,100 m2of land affected by the construction work and created a recreational area for its employees.

Inspired by the strong increase in energy prices since early 2021, the Getting to grips with energy prices brochure was published in January 2022 as a guide on energy saving for all employees.

TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP is currently planning to build a photovoltaics powered charging station for e-bikes and electric cars. The aim of this project is to reduce emissions from commuting and the company fleet and to facilitate a change to more sustainable means of transport.

Additional measuring equipment is continuously being installed in the production workshops at the two German sites in order to achieve an even better quantification of the individual consumptions and to avoid peaks in consumption.

From 2024, the international subsidiaries of TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP will be recording their energy consumption figures and suggest improvement.

Last but not least, the #energymovers campaign by TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP is making an important contribution to identifying with the values of the company. With the slogan We are energy movers, this concept embodies the in-house and external measures in HR policy with the objective of achieving sustainable company development. In times of a skills shortage, a number of companies are competing for the same talented candidates especially in industrial conurbations, explains Frank Springer. That means that we have to set ourselves apart and sharpen our profile.

At the same time, it is very important to be authentic within the company and to the outside. After all, we want the first impression of an applicant to be confirmed and strengthened later on when they have become an employee.

For TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP, giving employees a suitable perspective within the company and to support and challenge them along that path is the second building block for sustainable HR planning.

We are definitely recognising the social responsibility in our work, but also clear business advantages such as saving resources, reducing costs, and improving the working conditions for our employees, Frank Springer summarises the reason for and objective of all sustainability efforts.

As a side effect, we are also becoming more attractive as an employer, which is key for a company with a clear growth trajectory. We therefore see sustainability as a great opportunity that we are happy to seize, and not just as a social responsibility.
