Weg France demonstrates energy efficient technologies

In October 2021, industrial motor and drive manufacturer Weg France attended the 29th edition of Pollutec in Lyon, France. The international trade show, which specialises in environment and energy technologies, brought together some of the most innovative companies in areas such as waste management, water management, energy efficiency, sustainable cities, biodiversity and digital solutions.

The biennial show had to postpone its 2020 edition due to the pandemic. The 2021 event was a welcome return for exhibitors and visitors alike, serving as a meeting place for environmental professionals and a springboard for innovation. In addition to the 2,200 exhibitors representing 128 countries, Pollutec was also home to over 400 conferences, keynote speeches, workshops and demonstrations exploring innovation and trends in environmental technologies.

The four-day event comes at a critical time for industry. The transition to low-carbon energy solutions is essential to help meet the goals set out in the Paris Agreement, but this transition must go hand in hand with promoting energy efficiency.

One key area for this energy efficiency drive is electric motors. Legislative changes have accelerated this trend as more demanding requirements for motors and drives outlined in the new regulation EU 2019/1781 came into force on 1 July 2021. This replaced the earlier regulation 640/2009, which allowed IE2 motors to be used with variable speed drives (VSDs).

“At the show we demonstrated a global system with permanent magnet motors, CFW11 and CFW500 VSDs, a W22 motor with forced ventilation, a gearbox motor with MW500 VSD, WEG Motor Scan and our range of SSW07 and SSW900 soft starters,” explained Loic Kentrotis, marketing manager for Weg France.

“Weg’s ethos has always been centred around promoting energy efficiency, so we were keen to contribute to this discussion by demonstrating the clear advantages of opting for high efficiency motor and drive technologies. Weg’s motors have long met the scope of the current regulation, but we encourage all plant managers to think one step ahead and share our forward-thinking philosophy.

“For example, the Weg Super Premium range of IE4 motors will prove useful, as from 2023, 3-phase motors equal or exceeding 75kW and equal to or below 200kW with 2-, 4- or 6-poles will need to meet IE4 efficiency levels. In energy-intensive industries, thousands of motors often operate 24 hours a day. Even a slight improvement in efficiency, extrapolated over the sheer volume of motors and hours of operation, will benefit a businesses’ bottom line.”
